Claw, fur, scale, skin: Stories of medieval shapeshifters at Wolverhampton Literature Festival
The werewolf is a cruel creature, when the fury takes it. It consumes men, wreaks evil, and does no good. Living and roaming in the deep, dank woods.’
(Marie de France, 12th century)
A woman is cursed with scales and fiery breath. A hawk flutters through a barred prison window. A grief-stricken king sinks into the forest greenery. A man becomes suspicious about how long his wife spends in the bath, and a woman worries her husband is spending just a little too much time in the wolf-haunted forest.
Weaving story tendrils together with riddles and folk songs, storyteller and academic Daisy Black shares a series of medieval stories which blur the boundaries of human, vegetable and animal.
